Described as "winning" by Zarzuela!, Adrienne Starr is a mezzo soprano of great versatility. She has appeared on four continents in productions of opera, zarzuela, and musical theater.
Notable roles include Siebel in Faust (National Lyric Opera), Zita in Gianni Schicchi (Natchez Festival of Music), Miguelina in La Perichole (National Lyric Opera) and Beatrice in Beatrice et Benedict (Pine Mountain Music Festival). As a Resident Artist with DiCapo Opera in New York City, she performed numerous roles, including Siebel in Faust, Gianetta in L'Elisir d'Amore, and Cherubino in Le Nozze de Figaro. Her performances of Paloma in El Barberillo de Lavapies and Maria Jesus in Luis Alonzo with the Jarvis Conservatory in Napa Valley were seen on PBS stations nationwide.
Ms Starr was the first American to be invited to join the famous touring company Antologia de la Zarzuela in Madrid, appearing in dozens of performances throughout Spain. She was also the featured mezzo soprano soloist with Universal Creative's Christmas Concerts in Osaka, Japan. In September 2012 she performed the role of Carmen Aguilar in the new musical Music Appreciation. In November 2012, she appeared as the Sorceress in Dido and Aeneas with the In Series in Washington DC. The Washington Post wrote: "Adrienne Starr made a deliciously evil and feline Sorceress" (Nov 18, 2012). Also this season, she was the featured mezzo soloist in Familia Flamenco at the GALA Theater in Washington DC and as the soloist in the In Series Zarzuela outreach concerts. She returns to the In Series and GALA in the fall of 2013 for a double billing of Il Villi and Heart of Madrid.
Musical theater roles include Maria in West Side Story, Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, Carrie Pepperidge in Carousel, and Petra in A Little NIght Music.
She is the State, Regional, and National winner of the Music Teachers National Association competition, third place winner of the Texas/Oklahoma/Arkansas National Association of Teachers of Singing contest, and received third place in the Dicapo Opera New York Vocal Competition.
Ms Starr is also a writer and essayist. She received her Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Rice University. She divides her time between Washington DC, New York City, and England, with her husband, tenor Oliver Mercer.
