I discovered my love for writing fairly late in life, and while I find it thrilling to have a new passion, I'm not the "real" writer of the family. That would be my big sister, Alexandra Starr.
Alex is a smart, thoughtful, and modest person, and it shows in her pieces. She's written for the New York Times Magazine, Slate, The New Republic, and Business Week, to name a few. She's currently a fellow at the New America Foundation.
Last week she had a piece on NPR's All Things Considered. You can listen to it here.
Our entire family - me, Oliver, my parents, my sister, and my little niece Daphne - were on holiday in Paris when it aired, so we listened to it together online. Daphne's eyes went wide when she heard her mother's voice and she started yelling, "Yay, Mommy! Yay Mommy!"
What a brilliant feeling to set a good example for your daughter. There is nothing sweeter than hearing a child say they are proud of their parent.
